A well documented issue with BMW 4 cylinder diesel engines is a failure of the timing chain. Stretched, or even broken chains can cause catastrophic engine damage. A symptom can include an unpleasant noise from the engine. However, sometimes sudden failure can occur leaving the owner with a non-running car, huge inconvenience and large repair bills.
As with many issues, regular servicing can reduce the chances of failure but it is by no means a cure.
